How Thyroid Can Affect Your Fertility

Regulation of the metabiolism of the body depends on the thyroid hormones and even the level of blood calcium, energy production, fat metabolism, utilization of oxygen and balance of weigh and other hormones also rely on the thyroid gland.

Before considering its imbalance it is important to understand its hormones. Thyroid hormones involved the thyroid functioning hormone called the Thyroid Releasing Hormone (TRH) which is secreted from the hypothalamus in the brain and that stimulates the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain and give signal to release the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

TSH in return stimulates the thyroid gland to produce the Thyroxine (T4) & Triiodothyronine (T3) from which most of the T4 get turned into T3 in the liver. These thyroid hormones are synthesized from the amino acid Tyrosine taken from protein and the iodine

So there is chain functioning of thyroid hormones and disturbance of one can stop the entire chain that is why the low and high level of thyroid can affect the function of body. This imbalance can happen due to many reasons like autoimmune disorder, infections, genetic problem, exposure to environmental toxins, nutrient deficiency and due to imbalance of oestrogen dominance, high prolactin levels.

This imbalance mainly the low level of thyroid can affect the fertility of women adversely and can lead to various problems as follow

  • Females can face the problem of not producing the egg means ovulation problem which become hindrance for pregnancy
  • Even this imbalance makes the periods irregular and less frequent so which can create the problem in implanting the egg and leaving the body which is generally mistaken as regular period but it can be miscarriage.
  • Due to higher level of the TRH and low level of T 4 females can suffer due to no ovulation or irregular ovulation
  • Even it can cause over weight which is again become problem for fertility in both men and women.
