In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) & its Process

Fighting infertility is not easy and when it comes to the various treatments like IVF, it is pretty stressful and tiresome to some patients. The only thing that can uphold many couples is the hope of having a baby at last. When you think of IVF treatment, many questions come up, but here is the IVF Process that all women or couples must know before embarking on this journey;

An IVF treatment will always begin with a consultation procedure where the doctor will evaluate your ability to undergo the treatment and have a chat or make a physical examination of the woman.

Tests and ultrasounds follow after that to follow your hormones and get clear images of your reproductive system. A sperm analysis for the case of the males is performed. A woman’s menstrual cycle will be followed, and usually, fertility drugs like Clomid and Gonadotropins are given to the woman to stimulate ovulation and production of many healthy eggs in the ovaries. These can be taken in the form of injections or tablets.

A kit will be given to a woman to show that the eggs are ready to be extracted from the ovaries. The eggs are removed from the ovaries through a laparoscopy surgery and taken to the laboratory. The sperms are also acquired from a man through masturbation. They are washed and the best sperm is combined with the egg for fertilization in a Petri dish.

The eggs and the sperm are left for at least three or four days for cell division to effectively occur. The embryo is then transferred into the woman’s uterus for implantation and development up to the end of nine months.

A woman’s success chances are increased with infertility drugs, age and depending on the cause of the infertility. The IVF success rate can go as high as 50%
