Fallopian tube: Is it possible to conceive with just one fallopian tube?

Fallopian tube: Is it possible to conceive with just one fallopian tube?

At our IVF centre in Punjab, our gynecologist is always asked that one question and that is, “Can I conceive with one fallopian tube?”. At our infertility clinic in Ludhiana, we have seen many women getting pregnant even with just one tube. But, as long as there are no other infertility issues then it should not lead to any such problem. In case of poor sperm quality, endometriosis, or PCOS the women might need medical assistance to conceive.

What are the reasons for having problems with fallopian tubes?

The fallopian tube has the function to mature and release the egg for fertilization & then making it reach the uterus. But, sometimes the tubes are blocked, removed, or damaged which stops the ovulation cycle. Some of the major causes are:

  • Prior infection or other medical problem
  • Ectopic pregnancy which leads to permanent tube damage or removal of the tube
  • Anatomical abnormality or congenital birth defect
  • Scarring due to endometriosis
  • Fibroid tumors (blocks the fallopian tube to let it enter the uterus)
  • Pelvic surgery or abdominal surgery leads to scarring

Pregnancy with One Fallopian tube

All in all, you can still get pregnant with one fallopian tube. In this state, the other factors need to be in the right place like:

  • Other fallopian tube is healthy And working normally

Studies have shown that a functioning ovary can pick up the mature egg but that does not happen every time. However, when you ovulate regularly then there is no way that the loss of one tube will make it difficult for you to conceive. But, if there is a fertility issue then you need medical assistance and for that, the doctor can suggest IVF.

  • Ovulation is regular

Problems with periods or you haven’t had it in a long time then there are high chances you don’t ovulate every month. One fallopian tube is not able to do everything till the time you are not healthy. So, it is important to track your menstrual cycle, and when you are planning to conceive it will be helpful.

  • Male partner fertility does not have any issues

Your partner’s fertility will also make a difference. In case they have issues like poor sperm quality, abnormality with the sperm, sexual dysfunction, or any infertility problem, then your chances of conception are lower. So, to plan for your family the male partner’s fertility should be right.

Is there any fertility treatment for women with one fallopian tube?

The doctor can suggest you get the fallopian tube unblocked or address the issue of the scar. The fertility doctor might suggest surgery to remove the scar as you will be at increased risk of scarring.

In some cases, the doctor might suggest fertility medications and in case you are ovulating from one tube then the fertility medication dosage can be given to increase the number which boosts your chances of pregnancy.

Consult the doctor

If you are concerned about your health, then you should schedule your initial consultation with the doctor. Together will make the right treatment plan for you.
