  • Step 1

The first step of IVF treatment is to give patient fertility medications. The medication is given for at least two weeks. With the help of these medicines, the egg production is stimulated. For the process, multiple eggs are required because some times some eggs will not fertilize once they are retrieved. The doctor will examine the ovaries with transvaginal ultrasound. A sample of the blood test is also taken to check the hormone levels.

  • Step 2

Egg retrieval is done at the doctor’s clinic. In this process, the eggs are retrieved by inserting a needle through the upper vaginal wall. The egg is removed and then it is placed in a culture dish. After this, it is transferred to the device called an incubator. To reduce any type of discomfort medication is given, before starting the procedure. The average number of eggs which are retrieved is around 8 to 15.

  • Step 3

In case if a couple wants fresh sperm then the male partner is asked to produce a sample of sperm. The sperm is required for combining with the eggs.

  • Step 4

The process of combining the eggs and sperm is called insemination. Then they are stored in the laboratory for fertilization. If the chances of fertilization are very low then, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is used. With the help of this method, sperm is injected into the egg to achieve fertilization. The Doctor will continuously monitor the fertilization process  Once this process is completed, the fertilized eggs are considered as embryos. This process is also known as test tube baby treatment. Once the process is completed the doctor will advise bed rest for around 24 hours.

  • Step 5

After the successful embryo development, they are usually transferred into the woman’s uterus. Before this, the doctor will transfer only those embryos which are healthy. To transfer the embryos a small tube (catheter) is inserted into the uterus. Some women experience mild cramping during this procedure. If everything goes smoothly then implantation will occur around 6 to 10 days. This whole process takes five minutes.

  • Step 6

Once the embryo transfer is done, you have to visit your doctor for the blood test. In this test, the doctor will measure your hCG hormone level (human chorionic gonadotropin). If your bloodstream contains hCG then it means a positive pregnancy test.
