What is ART?

Sofat Infertility & Women Care Centre: ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) is a term used for fertility treatment which includes medications to surgery. In the treatment, the sperm or egg is manipulated so that the women can conceive. The method is very helpful who has an issue with sperm or the sperm is not able to fertilize the egg.

Types of ART

IVF procedure is the well-known option of treating infertility issues. This technology has been in use for around three decades. Undergoing the procedure improves the success rate by around 15 to 25 percent per cycle.

In the IVF cycle, the egg is retrieved and fertilized with the sperm. The fertilized egg is kept in the petri dish and it takes 3 to 5 days to form an embryo. Once the embryo is formed it is implanted back to the woman’s uterus.

The success of IVF is improved when women take the fertility drugs prescribed by the surgeon as it helps in increasing the production of eggs.

With IUI, the egg is fertilized inside the woman’s uterus. This option is affordable compared to other options. But yes the success rate of this option is not high. IUI works best when the patient is diagnosed with unexplained infertility. It means the sperm is not able to travel to the egg because of poor movement but there is a chemical mismatch between vaginal fluid and semen. With IUI the sperm is implanted into the uterus. The women are given fertility drugs so that egg production is increased.

In ICSI one or more egg is removed from a woman’s body. The mature egg is taken and injected with healthy sperm. The egg develops and then transferred back to the woman’s body. This option works best even if there is a sperm issue like a few quality sperm or low sperm movement.

In some cases sperm count and shape are proper but DNA damage can affect fertility or result in miscarriage. With this procedure, the healthiest sperm are selected and implanted with the egg.

  • Intrafallopian transfer

In this method, the egg is fertilized inside the fallopian tube. This option is best when the couple is facing unexplained infertility.

– Gamete intrafallopian transfer, transfer egg and sperm into the fallopian tube which fertilizes the egg.

– Zygote intrafallopian transfer is the same as IVF. The egg is retrieved from the body and fertilized in the lab. The difference is that the embryo is deposited into the fallopian tube.
